Spent Acid Exchange

A unique facility for managing the spent sulfuric acid
  • Spent Sulfuric acid is generated in the industrial units in and around GIDC Vatva, Naroda, Odhav etc involved in the manufacturing of dyes, dye Intermediates and other chemicals where sulfuric acid or oleum are used as raw materials.
  • The concentration of sulfuric acid in the spent acid usually is in the range of 10-30%. For individual industries it is challenging to store, handle or treat it effectively. Therefore, it was decided to establish common spent sulfuric acid facility NOVEL SPENT ACID MANAGEMENT.
  • It is india's first and unique common spent acid management plant located at GIDC Vatva, Ahmedabad.
  • NOVEL is a company registered under section 5 of factoryAct.
  • It is formed in 2009 by the consortiums of Naroda, Odhav and Vatva industries associations.
  • Rs. 30 crores were spent with the financial aid of Central & State Government.
  • At present, we are handling 1000 metric ton/day of spent sulfuric acid of 30% acidity.
  • Segregation and collection has been done at site in different tanks depending on the concentration of sulfuric acid and other properties.
  • The colourless and concentrated spent acid is directly supplied to the actual user to utilize as a raw material in the textile processor as a neutralizing agent in waste water treatment.
  • Part of the spent acid is supplied to ferrous sulphate, alum, single super phosphate and cement Industries for co-processing.
  • The relatively dilute and reasonably colourless spent acid is neutralized using limestone powder and hydrated lime for Gypsum production, which is supplied to the cement industries under AFR.
  • Tili date, 20 lac Ton acid & handled and treated and 9 lac Ton of Chemical Gypsum is produced and sent to cement Industries for co-processing.
  • The waste water generated is treated at in situ to ETP consisting of primary and secondary treatment facilities, and then it is sent to CETP Vatva for further treatment and disposal.
  • It is a perfect example of the reuse and recycling of the waste.
  • More than 200 units are the members of the NOVEL

The relevant details of the project are summarized below...

Total Waste Handling Capacity 1000 ton/day
Average Acid Content 30% wt./wt. H2SO4
Waste to be Reused 300 to 400 Ton/day
Waste to be Converted to Gypsum 600 to 700 Ton/day
Saleable Gypsum Produced on Neutralization 400 Ton/day
